The Reluctant Watch Designer
Expert engineers design luxury watches with care and precision.  Experts and enthusiasts consider certain engineers “masters†and “artisans.â€Â Some of their names are synonymous with companies (Audemars Piguet, Giovanni Panerai, Adrien Philippe, Cartier) – others are not as well known. Â
These individuals have fascinating stories. This is the first in a series of blogs where we present their tales. Â
We’re going to first look at Gérald Genta (1931 – 2011). His tale will take a few blogs to tell, as well. Â
With all his success, respect, and dedication, he often said that he did not like watches and did not wear them. Nonetheless, Genta designed over 100,000 (no, that is not a typo – he actually designed over 100,000 watches). Many watch enthusiasts and experts consider Genta the premier luxury designer and say that he had the most impact on luxury watch history. His designs literally revolutionized the industry. Â
Genta was born in Geneva, Switzerland during the Second World war and he grew up during the Great Depression. He escaped the pain of the times through creativity. He especially enjoyed painting and Picasso greatly influenced him. He quit school to study jewelry making and earned money making silver portraits of children. He considered a fashion career, but Geneva was the luxury watch capital, so such was where his path led. He became a sensation. His top designs include the following:
•   Patek Philippe Nautilus
•   Royal Oak
•   Omega Constellation
•   IWC
•   Ingenieur
•   Bulgari-Bulgari
•   Gefica Safari
•   Pasha
•   Octogonal
•   Retrograde
•   Grande Sonnerie
He was the first to incorporate Mickey Mouse and other cartoon characters into luxury watches and also introduced luxury steel sports watches. He additionally designed for Seiko and Timex, yet preferred focusing on luxury watches. Â
This is just the beginning of Genta’s compelling story. As mentioned, to come. Â
