Pune: Even as governments across the globe are imposing bans on single use plastics in an endeavour to reduce the carbon footprint and stop further damage to the environment, the world continues to rely heavily on plastic for an assortment of applications.Â
According to an analysis by growth strategy consulting and research firm, Frost and Sullivan, global revenue for the plastics sector is likely to expand at 5% this year, pointing towards the continued and increasing demand for the plastic.Â
While the demand continues to rise, it has become imperative for world governments and global manufacturers to innovate and develop sustainable materials that can be delivered as an alternative to plastic to end-users.Â
Packaging and shipping, for example, consumes millions of tonnes of plastic every year but there is a call across industries to reduce dependence on plastics and search for alternatives for adequate and safe packaging. Walmart-owned e-commerce giant, Flipkart, recently announced the elimination of single-use plastic packaging from the supply chain. However, the bans continue to leave a void in the packaging industry which is grappling for a sustainable alternative.Â
A front-runner in the race for new materials are biopolymers - polymers produced using compostable and organic matter - to ensure minimal harm to the environment while disposing.Â
In line with the global race towards creating sustainable packaging solutions, Safepack Solutions has launched a range of compostable products to meet the needs of the end consumer.Â
Tests run on Safepack Compostable Film revealed substantial reduction in mass of the film over a period of 5 months.
The initial sample weighed about 53 grams and was left to compost. After 5 months, the sample weighed 13.25 grams and later biodegraded completely.
According to research conducted by the company, the compostable anti-rust films biodegrades
into carbon dioxide, water and biomass, without causing any eco-toxicity to the environment.Â
Following research and tests, Safepack Solutions has launched a compostable range including anti-rust VCI films and bags, anti-rust VCI masterbatch,
biopolymer (PLA) coated paper boards, biopolymer coated laminates for food packaging and biopolymer coated paperboards for e-commerce packaging.Â
