In the process of transporting products sometimes space is limited. The products reach their capacity and when the shipping container is ready to zip shut then somebody’s stuff will have to be left out because the container reaches its capacity when it is transported by truck or plane or train. Thus every carrier has some packing strategies while shipping to maximize their space of capacity and revenue. To measure volumetric weight a technique is created by the carriers to make the most out of lightweight items that occupy more spaces.
How is volumetric weight calculated?
Volumetric weight is calculated by measuring the length, width, and height of the box. After that multiply the results to obtain the cubic size of your package.
Lets give you an example: You have a box measuring 40 inches x 16 inches x 16 inches. Multiplying the three dimensions — 40 • 16 • 16 you get 10,240 cubic inches.
Divide the total cubic inches by the dimensional weight divisor which depends on the carrier.
Note: In kilograms, the formula is L*W*H/6000 for domestic shipments and L*W*H/5000 for international shipments.
