Guide to Carbon Steel Plates

ASME SA516 is another name for ASTM A516. The A516 / SA516 standard, which stands for "standard specification for pressure vessel plates, carbon steel, for moderate- and lower-temperature use," is almost the default material specification for pressure vessel applications.

This grade is designed for use in welded pressure vessels when improved notch toughness is required, and is often used in mild and lower temperature applications. All plates with a thickness of more than 1-1/2" must be normalized. The industry's most prevalent pressure vessel steel plate grade is A516.

This ASTM A516 specification applies to carbon steel plates intended principally for use in welded pressure tanks with improved notch toughness. The plates are offered in four classes, each with a distinct strength level: 55, 60, 65, and 70. Grade 70, often known as A516-70, is the most prevalent. Only the capacity of the composition to achieve the specified mechanical property criteria limits the maximum thickness of plates.
